Botany Sarsaparilla
Sarsaparilla (Smilax medica) is a climbing plant from the family Smilacaceae and is native to tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America. The plant can grow up to 50 meters tall and thrives in moist, well-drained soil.
Sarsaparilla is a woody, vining plant with thorny stems and heart-shaped leaves. The root is fleshy, brownish-red, and branches into thin roots that can reach several meters in length. The roots are the part traditionally used for extracts and tinctures. Small yellow-green flowers appear during flowering, followed by red berries that often attract birds.
The root's aroma is warm and spicy, with a sweet, earthy undertone – a characteristic that made it popular in ancient tonics and traditional herbal preparations.
Origin and traditional application
Sarsaparilla has a rich history in traditional herbal medicine. For centuries, the root has been prized by indigenous peoples in Central and South America for its versatile properties. In the 16th century, Spanish explorers brought Sarsaparilla to Europe, where it quickly became popular in apothecary recipes and herbal formulas.
In the 19th century, Sarsaparilla was found in numerous tonics, syrups, and bitters, often used as part of natural cleansing treatments. The plant also remains valued in modern herbal medicine, especially among those who want to connect with traditional plant-based remedies.
Today it is called Sarsaparilla
